The War on Drugs is now costing taxpayers an estimated $69 billion a year, resulting in the incarceration of about 400,000 people (88% for marijuana posession), and getting thousands of innocent bystanders killed. Many inner city neighborhoods have been turned into war zones, whole police departments have been corrupted, and political debate is being stiffled.

Some proponents of the drug war have told us that we shouldn't even discuss decriminalization, claiming that the debate would result in higher rates of drug use among kids. If anything, many of the films shown in our schools have encouraged higher rates of drug use amongst our children. Drug treatment efforts have been limited or even shut down by drug enforcement.

Thousands of innocent bystanders have been killed in botched drug raids, drive by shootings, and gang violence that never happened before the drug war started. Thousands have been imprisoned on drug charges who've never even used drugs. Simply passing a joint around, even if you haven't smoke it, can get you imprisoned. People have been jailed for standing on the wrong street corner, or for guilt by association. Others have been incarcerated simply for taking a phone call.

Thousands of Americans have had their homes raided, dragged into the street while officers tear their homes apart. Houses, boats, planes, businesses, and money have been siezed without trial, without charges even being filed against private citizens.

We're not the only country seeing that drug prohibition isn't working. Spain, Italy, and Luxemburg have decriminalized most drugs. Portugal has legalized all drugs. Holland now tolerates drug use in designated areas, and all have seen their drug crime rates decline tremendously. They still have drug users, but no illegal drug traffic. Theft and violent crime rates have declined, but in America, stepped up drug enforcement is followed by rising crime rates.

Will you get involved in state and local politics, to work to educate people about the harm of the drug war? Will you lobby your legislators and other elected officials about this disasterous policy? Will you show others how to effect change in this country, and the need to do so?

If we fail in this effort, thousands more lives will be ruined. More bystanders will fall prey to gang violence and drug raids gone wrong. More people will lose their homes, and thousands more will be needlessly imprisoned. But if we fail, at least let us say that we did something--to those who've lost loved ones to the drug war--let them remember that we tried to end this nightmare.

• I think we're already working on this, but it isn't going to be easy. I tried to get a related line put into the NH Republican Party platform, but the bosses removed it. One of our state reps asked for a committee to study the issue and he was shouted down something like 20 to 2. We have to get involved politically and win a few elections before we'll be able to make much of a difference on this one.

• Since this is a nationwide pledge, I have been contacting people outside of NH, and hope that this pledge also draws attention to the level of activism in our state. I think that when people see what we're able to accomplish here, it will also encourage similar activism accross the country.
  
  More importantly, more people will see what we're up against. Those who are using negative and dishonest tactics will have a harder time keeping the position that they have when more people see what they're doing.

• A solid strategy for involving other people is to target other politically active groups (taxpayer's groups, property rights groups, environmental groups). These are the folks who are doing most of the work in politics, and these are the people who influence local opinion. Many people believe that we should decriminalize outright, but don't know the harm caused by the drug war.
  
  There are only a few people actively educating the public about the damage being done to people. If we can educate other activists, some will pass the word just as we have been.

• I am signing my name to this, not because I currently believe we should support decriminalization of drugs, but because I feel that effort should be put forth by our legislature to research this issue. I think after careful eximnation the right choice should be made but at this time I do not know what that choice is.

• I'm an older guy (50), and rather straight, so you might say that this doesn't apply to me. But you would be wrong. And not just from the viewpoint of its cost. There's also the issue of the freedom to do what you wish, so long as you don't harm anyone else. It seems that Ron Paul is the only politician I have seen who understands the issue as it truely is--an issue of rights AND an issue of a waste of many billions of dollers.
  
  But Ron Paul also understands that all wars -the war on drugs as well as the war in Iraq- can only be stopped by cutting off the money. We need a smaller, less intrusive government. That's why he wants to eliminate the IRS, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Education, etc. As Henry David Thoreau said, "That government is best that governs least."
  
  Ron Paul is the last best hope to save the Constitution. It seems to me that sending him a donation is the best way to fulfill this pledge.

• Of course, I'm supporting Ron Paul's campaign, too. I think that we also need to move forward with long term effort to involve more people in drug policy. That new person you reach may become an important donor or activist, too. He or she may reach out to lots of other people, and do more to ivolve people than anyone else on this board.

• I will spend the next 60 days doing all I can to promote and educate people on the benefits and government lies of medicinal cannabis, but only if 50 people join me.

  Being an Attorney and a legal, medicinal vaporizer user of cannabis. I can semantically say that I do not SMOKE cannabis, I volatize it for phyto-inhalation [ I am also a Crohn's sufferer and a terminal Hep-C patient (acquired thanks to a transfusion at the age of 5.)
  
  According to the State I live in, if a doctor feels that this highly useful substance helps a patient, the state must issue a medical ID and allow the person to make use of dispensaries, or grow their own medicine.
  
  The FEDS do not recognize this, and have been raiding LEGALLY MANDATED dispensaries, arresting WHEELCHAIR BOUND CANCER PATIENTS and generally fighting a loosing battle.
  
  George Washington grew and cultivated hemp, both for it's useful properties, it's oil, and it's medicinal properties.
  
  The "Save the Children; this will confuse them" argument doesn't fly with me. Medical cannabis programs are rather strictly controlled, and there is no chance a child would ever receive a cannabis card or a recommendation from a doctor.

• Well, something surely HAS to happen about the drugs and I don't think you're providing much of a solution here. How do you propose the drug issue is sorted out? Education is not doing enough; and neither is the public. Something has to be done, and a drug war is certainly more effective than nothing. If there is another system we ought to use it, but no one seems to be coming up with anything vaguely effective.
